We can officially say that more liberal-leaning people often have psychotic tendencies. But we already knew that.

A 2012 study from The American Journal of Political Science(AJPS) claimed that conservatives have been associated with psychoticism, but earlier last year, AJPS came out saying there was “an error.”

Turns out, it was the other way around:

“The descriptive analyses report that those higher in Eysenck’s psychoticism are more conservative, but they are actually more liberal; and where the original manuscript reports those higher in neuroticism and social desirability are more liberal, they are, in fact, more conservative. Furthermore, Neuroticism is completely unrelated to social ideology, which has been the focus of many in the field. Finally, those higher in Social Desirability are also more likely to express socially liberal attitudes.”

The paper investigated the connection between innate personality traits and political beliefs as an adult.

Somewhere along the lines, a scientist transposed the data that pointed to the original claim, so the authors of the study came out with a correction.

“The authors regret that there is an error in the published version […]Thus, where we indicated that higher scores […] reflect a more conservative response, they actually reflect a more liberal response.”

The original language summarizes that the higher someone rates for psychoticism, the more likely they are to be conservative minded.

As a matter of fact, the authors report that the opposite is true:

“Correlation not causation: the relationship between personality traits and political ideologies,” published in the American Journal of Social Science in 2012, initially found that social conservatives might be more genetically hardwired to exhibit psychotic behaviors than their socially liberal counterparts. […]The interpretation of the coding of the political attitude items in the descriptive and preliminary analyses portion of the manuscript was exactly reversed.”

The original report has often been used and cited in other many works. This is a big revelation that points scientifically to what we have known all along, that liberals are more susceptible to psychotic thoughts and tendencies. Conservatives 1, liberals 0.
