Sarah Sanders

During a recent press briefing, White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders got into it with a reporter. The spat began over a question about President Trump’s tweet invoking Chuck Schumer in relation to the New York City terrorist attack:

“The president is saying that [Schumer] is responsible, at least in part, for this attack. Does the president still see him…,” a reporter said before Sanders stopped him.

“Before you go any further,” Sanders started, “the president has not blamed Senator Schumer.”

Sanders clarified the administration’s position that the attacker, Uzbekistan citizen Sayfullo Habibullaevic Saipov, was responsible but that certain policies could “help protect American citizens.”

Here is President Trump’s tweet that started the conversation:

President Trump wants to push a merit-based system for immigration and do away with the diversity lottery visa program. Sanders was later asked if the White House would work with Chuck Schumer. Sanders indicated they would as long as he supported extreme vetting for immigration applications.

Ironically, the media rushes to politicize every shooting in America, but then attacks President Trump for pointing out that Chuck Schumer supports a diversity lottery program. It is fair to say that both sides politicize tragedies when it suits there needs. Calling others out for doing the same thing probably isn’t the smartest course of action. Sanders made that known in this exchange.
