President Trump on signed an executive order on Thursday to protect Americans’ freedom of speech on increasingly intolerant college campuses. According to an administrative official, the executive order is part of the president’s war on “political correctness.” Schools who refuse to uphold the First Amendment rights of their students risk losing billions in federal research funding and grants from a dozen federal agencies. Additionally, the Education Department has been directed to publish a “scorecard” for colleges with information on earnings, debt, default rates and student loan repayment rates with policy recommendations.

President Trump on Thursday is set to sign an executive order on campus free speech, ordering colleges to “support free speech” or face “very costly” consequences.

An administration official said the order – part of the president’s crusade against “political correctness” – basically reinforces what most schools are already supposed to be doing by mandating that they agree to promote free speech or risk losing billions in federal research funding.

“While many schools – or all schools – are frankly supposed to follow this currently, it will ensure that grant dollars are associated through the grant-making process, and schools will have to certify that they’re following this condition,” the official said, according to Politico.
