Former Director of National Intelligence (DNI) James Clapper told CNN’s Chris Cuomo on Monday that federal law enforcement was investigating the Trump campaign only to protect it from undue Russian infiltration, reports NTK Network.
“The big thing here is this is not about spying on his campaign, it’s about what the Russians are doing,” Clapper said. “Were they attempting to infiltrate the campaign?”
Cuomo asked Clapper why the FBI did not just go straight to the campaign with their concerns, a question the former DNI dismissed.
“This is one of many techniques [the FBI] can use or bring to bear in the interest of determining whether there were active efforts by the Russians to infiltrate the campaign,” he said. “We ought to think about it as part of the effort of the FBI to keep the nation safe and secure, and protect our voting process.”
Clapper criticized the president’s order to investigate the use of an informant in his campaign, saying Trump was using the Department of Justice as his “private investigatory body.”
Clapper began his conversation saying that Trump’s use of the Justice Department was a “disturbing assault on the independence of the Department of Justice,” and believes that Trump is just using the DOJ for his own benefit, instead of the president just trying to defend himself and be able to continue leading the country.
Clapper also told Cuomo that he thinks the politicising of the probe is dangerous because what the FBI is doing is “legitimate” and is important in finding out what the true nature of the Russian collusion or involvement was in the 2016 election.
Clapper is simply continuing the CNN narrative that Trump is already guilty before being charged and will support and back up any effort the FBI does in regards to the Russian collusion investigation, even if that means illegal spying and surveillance on the Trump campaign.
