Mexican Citizen Raul Carlos Monarca-Gonzalez was recently sentenced to 30 months in prison following a conviction connected with a massive food stamps fraud scheme. Monarca-Gonzalez, 40, was convicted in federal court in Hartford, Connecticut.
Monarca-Gonzalez worked at the WB Trade Fair Grocery store in Waterbury, CT. He illegally allowed customers to exchange food stamps for money from November 2014 to June 2016. Investigators say he redeemed $3.2 million over 18 months. The store was allowed to legally redeem $120,000 to $240,000.
Not only will he serve 30 months in jail, but he must pay $1.5 million in restitution.
He pleaded guilty to unlawful use of food stamp benefits. He will also most likely be deported after his prison term.
