Democratic Senator Joe Manchin was appalled by the childish behavior of his Democratic colleagues at the State Of The Union Address. Manchin was one of the only Democrats to stand when President Trump entered the room last night. It has been a longstanding tradition that everyone, regardless of party affiliation, stands when the president enters the room.
The Washington Times reports:
“Most Democratic lawmakers, dressed in black, refused to stand to greet President Trump for his first State of the Union address Tuesday night, setting the tone for one of the most divisive receptions for a president in modern history.
“Democrats even sat on their hands when Mr. Trump celebrated historically low unemployment rates and vowed not to forget people suffering from natural disasters.
“Democrats’ confusion over when to stand was on full display when Mr. Trump suggested Americans should stand for the National Anthem.
“House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi stood and tapped her hands together, looking around at her colleagues still sitting and giving them a quick shrug. Rep. Steny H. Hoyer, her chief lieutenant, stayed seated.”
But Manchin was the lone exception. He regularly stood with Republicans. When asked about it later he slammed Democrats:
“Manchin told ‘Fox & Friends’ host Brian Kilmeade it was common courtesy to stand for Trump as a Democrat.
“’That’s the way I was raised in West Virginia. We have respect. There is civility still yet. There should be civility in this place,’ he said. ‘That’s disrespectful. Last night was disrespectful.’
“Manchin, who is up for re-election in November, said he stayed behind to thank Trump for highlighting vital issues like opioid addiction and coal production.
“’I stood there and shook his hand and thanked him. Because he talked about coal. We’re going to do coal research and development. Opioid addiction. I need that. Infrastructure,’ Manchin said. ‘I never saw a pothole that belonged to a Democrat or Republican. We both get blamed for that one. We got to fix this stuff.’”
It’s too bad more Democrats did not take Manchin’s lead.
