President Trump today made an amazing offer to NFL kneelers. After months of fighting over protests during the national anthem culminated in the Philadelphia Eagles being disinvited from the White House, it looks like the president is ready to put the feud to rest.
President Trump told NFL players to make their case as to why specific people, who were treated unfairly in their eyes by the criminal justice system, should be pardoned. And if he agrees, he’ll do it.
Trump said, “What I’m going to do is I’m going to say to them instead of talk…I am going to ask all of those people to recommend to me — because that’s what they’re protesting. People that they think were unfairly treated by the justice system … I understand that. I’m going to ask them to recommend to me people that were unfairly treated. Friends of theirs or people they know about and I’m going to take a look at those applications. If I find — if my committee finds they’re unfairly treated, we will pardon them or at least let them out.”
He also mentioned that he still believes every player should show respect for the national anthem.
To me, the Eagles missed a huge opportunity by snubbing the president. They can pretend they are the victims but they meant to embarrass the president by having almost the entire team cancel at the last moment. He was right to disinvite them. But now he’s put the issue squarely back in their court. He’s sent an olive branch and said he’s willing to work with them on criminal justice reform. The Eagles had a chance to voice their concerns to the most powerful man in the world but they opted for a publicity stunt instead. MY God, Kim freaking Kardashian was able to get someone pardoned just by meeting with the president for a few hours. Can you imagine what a team of NFL players could have received if they had just given Trump a chance?
So now we will see if these “aggrieved” NFL kneelers really want to see social justice or if they’re just looking to get attention.
