Could the unthinkable really happen? Could a major presidential candidate drop out of the race? We previously reported rumblings that Donald Trump could drop out, but that proved to be nothing more than noise. Chances are this is just noise as well, but if Hillary Clinton has serious health issues – she might have no choice.
On NPR’s Morning Edition this morning, journalist Cokie Roberts said establishment Democrats might be getting nervous about Hillary Clinton’s health. This came one day after Clinton collapsed after a 9/11 memorial event.
The campaign later said she has pneumonia. Roberts said there are whisperings of her leaving the campaign trail:
“It’s taking her off of the campaign trail,” said Roberts Monday morning, indicating that the pneumonia has forced Clinton to cancel her upcoming trip to California. But as for members of the Democratic party, “It has them very nervously beginning to whisper about her stepping aside and finding another candidate.”
Despite any rumors that someone like Joe Biden would be able step in as the new standard-bearer of the Democratic party in the absence of Hillary Clinton, Roberts admitted that the idea may be farfetched. “I think it’s unlikely to be a real thing. I’m sure it’s an overreaction about an already-skittish party,” she added.”

Chances are this won’t go anywhere. But who knows for sure?

The rules regarding replacing a presidential candidate for the Democratic Party read:
“a special meeting to fill a vacancy on the National ticket shall be held on the call of the Chairperson, who shall set the date for such meeting in accordance with the procedural rules provided for in Article Two, Section 8(d) of these Bylaws.” That referenced section reads, “all questions before the Democratic National Committee shall be determined by majority vote of those members present and voting in person or by proxy.”
