Speaking with ABC’s “This Week” program, Cokie Roberts made a startling statement, “Every female member in the press corps knew” to avoid being alone in elevators and in government buildings with Rep. John Conyers and also stated she has known about him “for years.”
Conyers stepped down from his role on the House Judiciary Committee after multiple allegations of sexual harassment against him surfaced.
Nancy Pelosi referred to Conyers as an “icon” while other Democratic leaders sit back a refuse to acknowledge the allegations against Conyers.
Cokie Roberts knows that this has been going on within Capital Hill for decades but said that with recent high-profile allegations, that more women are coming forward.
Roberts also said that in fact “it does make a difference” now that more women are comfortable with coming out with allegations while also implying that Conyers behavior was well-known amongst members of the press corps.
“Don’t get in the elevator with him, you know, and the whole every female in the press corps knew that, right, don’t get in elevator with him,” said Roberts. She continued, “Now people are saying it out loud. And I think that does make a difference.”
It’s sad that a member of Congress who females in the press corps should have been able to trust, let them down and we are just now finding out about these sick accusations.
Things are only going to get worse for these perverts on Capitol Hill. There is a sense now that it is OK for women to come forward after hiding allegations out of fear of retribution. Get ready for an even bigger tidal wave of politicians going down for illicit behavior.
