CNN’s latest ‘bombshell‘ pointed out that Melania Trump refused to wear a headscarf in Saudi Arabia, but wore a veil to meet the pope. They quickly tried to label her as a hypocrite for disrespecting Islam but not Catholicism:
“With Vatican protocol in mind, the first lady arrived to meet the Pope on Wednesday wearing a black veil and long-sleeved Dolce and Gabbana black dress draped down to her calf. President Donald Trump’s daughter, Ivanka Trump, wore a similar outfit with a larger veil.
“Days earlier, during her visit to Saudi Arabia, a strictly conservative Muslim theocracy, the first lady eschewed the customary headscarf, but stepped foot in the birthplace of Islam wearing a black jumpsuit reminiscent of the abaya worn by most women there. Despite not covering her head, the first lady’s outfit earned her rave reviews from the local press, who praised her attention to the country’s culture.”
This has been a bit of controversy for a while now with CNN. They have been talking about Melania’s outfit choices the entire trip. But they have forgotten a few things.
First, Saudi Arabia did not request Melania Trump wear a headscarf – the Vatican requested she wear a veil:
“Per Vatican protocol, women who have an audience with the pope are required to wear long sleeves, formal black clothing, and a veil to cover the head,” Stephanie Grisham, Melania Trump’s communications director, told CNN, noting that Michelle Obama wore a similar outfit when she had an audience with Pope Benedict XVI. The first lady did not cover her head in Saudi Arabia, Grisham added, because Saudi Arabia did not request any particular attire.
Secondly, Islam dictates that women must wear headscarves as a sign of subjugation. Catholics view women as honored and sacred and thus veils are a sign of respect:
~the Catholic Church believes women are sacred because they create life and things that are sacred are veiled. Deep breaths everyone.~
