White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Thursday that the U.S. will continue to modernize its nuclear arsenal and ensure its capabilities remain “unmatched” following Russian President Vladimir Putin’s claims of a new high-tech arsenal, reports The Independent Journal Review.
“President Trump understands the threats facing America and our allies in this century and is determined to protect our homeland and preserve peace through strength. U.S. Defense capabilities are and will remain second to none,” Sanders told the press during her daily briefing.
During Putin’s own State of the Union address on Thursday, he said that Russia would retaliate and could use nuclear weapons against any attack on the country’s allies.
“This is unheard of and nobody else has such a system in the world,” the Russian president said. “They might create something like this in the future, but by then our guys will have created something new as well.”
Putin continued to boast about his arsenal saying that his “new” nuclear weapons could attack any target and could succeed against any missile defense system in the world, according to the New York Post.
“I want to tell all those who have fueled the arms race over the last 15 years, sought to win unilateral advantages over Russia, introduced unlawful sanctions aimed to contain our country’s development: All what you wanted to impede with your policies have already happened,” Putin said. “You have failed to contain Russia.”
Tensions between the Kremlin and the U.S. have always been around, but are especially high now that the special counsel Robert Mueller and his team continue to investigate alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 U.S. presidential election.
Last month the Trump administration said it would not implement additional sanctions on Russia that were mandated by Congress last year as part of Mueller’s Russia probe.
If Sanders quote is any indication, President Trump is not and never will be afraid of any foreign government who tries to bully the United States with their intimidation with nuclear weapons because Trump knows we are just as capable if not more so than any of these threatening countries.
